Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. When she was a young girl, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to the word association. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teens, and joined the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few days, she concluded that this school wasn't suitable for her. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt she was admitted. A classmate of hers were Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. Her regular work in theatre has led to her joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate was recognized for her stand-up comedy, which became part of her portfolio in the year 1996.
